OCR means Optical Character Recognition, and it can read printed digits like pre-printed roll nos., barcodes, etc. On the other hand, ICR means Intelligent Character Recognition and can read handwritten digits. Moreover, the OMR and ICR reader software can also read images or photographs attached to admission or application forms and save them in the database.

In order to make sure that the software reads the OMR forms with handwriting correctly, you have to fill the form properly. Read the instructions about filling the form. If you have been asked to use black ball point pen, use only that pen and no other pen. If the form has to be filled in capitals, do not use small letters anywhere. These instructions are mentioned for a reason and hence should be strictly followed.

The handwritten OMR forms are processed in the same way as the OMR forms that have only bubbles. Hence, you can use any scanner for scanning the sheets. The OMR software reads the sheets and transfers the information received to an Excel sheet.
